Amarnath cave is located in Jammu and Kashmir, approximately at a height of 12,760 feet and it is one of the most popular pilgrimage destinations to Hindus. The Amarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and according to Hindu mythology; it is believed that this is where Lord Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his wife Parvati. Every year, the cave sits a giant ice stalagmite that is supposed to resemble the Shiva Ling.

Amarnath Cave can be visited during the monsoon months of July and August and for this, you need to do proper registration which can be done by Amarnath Yatra Online Registration. An ice mound is formed inside the cave and it takes the shape of the Shiva lingam which gradually rises to take a full form shape on a full moon night.

General Information

  • The closest airport to Amarnath is Srinagar, located at a distance of around 95 km from Pahalgam, the base camp for Amarnath Yatra. The nearest railhead to Amarnath is Jammu, located at a distance of around 315 km from Pahalgam.
  • Medical certificate is a must before taking the arduous journey. It is advisable to get a thorough check-up by authorized physician around 3 months prior to the date of yatra.
  • Compulsory Health Certificate from the Doctor is to be submitted along with the registration fee at the registration counters.
  • No Yatri will be allowed to proceed on the journey without a Registration Card. Registration of pilgrims are undertaken about a month ahead of the date fixed for commencement of Yatra.

Visitor Information

  • The gates of Access Control at Domel and Chandanwari open at 05.00 am and close at 11.00 am. Reach the gates on time.
  • Pilgrims are advised to carry sufficient woollens such as sweaters,  drawers, woollen trousers, monkey cap etc.
  • Do not trek alone. Try to move in groups. Also make sure people moving ahead you and behind you in your sight.
  • People who might not be able to trek could take the horses or the chair to go up. This could be fixed at Pahalgam or chandanwari. 
  • Ladies to wear clothing fit for trek like chudidhars and not sarees.
  • Don't throw the non-environment friendly materials (plastic polythene etc) on your way. Help to keep the area clean and fresh for our and future generations.
  • Don’t commence journey on an empty stomach. If you do so, you may attract a serious medical problem.
  • Avoid throwing coins, currency notes, decorative chunnis, brass lotas or any other material towards the Shivlingam while having Darshans at the Holy Cave
  • Do not bring with you any polythene material as its use is banned in J&K and is punishable under law   
  • Do not leave Panjtarni Camp towards Holy Cave after 3.00 PM as no darshan is allowed at Holy Cave after 6.00 PM.
  • Carry your name and details on a paper sheet and an identification card in your pocket. Mentioning your companion’s details on a slip with you is a good idea.
  • Keep the yatra slip duly stamped by the government tourism department.
  • Do seek immediate assistance of the Police in case any member of your group is missing. Also have an announcement made on the Public Address System at the Yatra Camp.
  • The shortcuts which are steeper could exhaust you faster. Follow the standard route followed by all the pilgrims

Best Time to Visit

The only time when the pilgrims can visit this holy shrine is during the month of Sharavan (July and August). The dates may, however, vary depending on the weather conditions and according to Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) in the month of Sharavan (Vikrama Samwat).

Chhari Mubarak


After the pratham Pooja is performed, the Chhari is then taken to Dashnami Akhara where it is kept for darshan.

Several Vedic mantras, as well as Shlokas, are chanted in praise of Lord Shiva, following which the Prasad is distributed among the devotees.This Pooja is performed at the holy cave on the day the Yatra is declared open.

Sheshnag Lake


Sheshnag Lake is situated at the track leading to Amarnath Cave. Lake is 23 km away from Pahalgam. According to the Hindu mythology, Sheshnag means the king of snakes and the lake was dug by Sheshnag himself.

Betaab valley

Near Pahalgam, Hajan, Pahalgam.

Betaab valley is 15 km far from Pahalgam. The valley falls between Pahalgam and Chandanwadi and is in route Amarnath Temple Yatra. It is surrounded on three sides by mountains that rise 300 metres above it.
