Overview

Belur Math is located in Kolkata and is a dedicate Temple to Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda. Swami Vivekananda used to stay at this place and this place also served for most of the monastic disciples of Sri Ramakrishna. Sri Sarada Devi also visited this place on several occasions. The room where Swamiji attained Mahasamadhi is also maintained and preserved in the Temple.

Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission also have their headquarters at this place and there is also a museum in the temple premises that has articles connected with the history of Ramakrishna Math and Mission. The Temple also has amazing green lawns that add up to the overall serenity and beauty of the place. All this makes Belur Math an important place of pilgrimage for people all over the world. There is also a vast campus adjacent to Belur Math where there are several educational institutions of the Ramakrishna Mission.

General Information

  • Belur Math is well connected by Rail and Air both. Kolkata Airport is located around 7 KM away from Belur Math and it is about 6.4 kms from Howrah Station. There are many local modes of transportation available as well to roam in the city as well.
  • The official timings of the Temple are from Morning: 8:30 am to 11:30 am and in Evening: 4 pm to 6 pm. The Temple remains closed on Mondays.
  • There is no entry fee in the Temple.
  • There is no ritualistic offering made, no flowers, or sweets put on offer. You can sit quietly and meditate.

Visitor Information

  • Maintain silence inside the Math.
  • Remove your shoes and slippers before entering the temple premises.
  • Try and keep the premises clean and don’t throw litter in the campus.
  • When the Aarti begins the visitors are supposed to sit inside the main Sri Ramakrishna Temple and not allowed to loiter around.
  • Cameras and cell phones are not allowed inside the Temple.
  • You will be comfortable in communicating in both Hindi and English languages.
  • There is a library hall which contains all books related to Ramakrishna- Vivekananda literature and also about Vedanta in various languages.
  • Guests and visitors can make day trips outside the math but are requested not to go the premises in the evenings.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to explore the Belur Math is during the festivities like Durga Puja, Kali Puja and Ras Poornima celebrations at the month of September and October.

Durga Puja

Durga Puja is celebrated on the first week of October, there is a magnificence of Durga Puja in Kolkata.

Kali Puja

Kali Puja on the first week of November at Diwali Occasion, this puja is dedicated to Goddess Kali.

Mangalarati

Kolkata.

The activities of the Math begin early in the morning with a 'Mangalarati' at 4 am, followed by the Japa and meditation at the main temple. This ceremony is held only by the monks and is not open for the public. The first meal is offered to Bhagavan Ramakrishna as bhog at 7 am and by 11 am the first annabhog is ready to be offered. Visitors can have bhog from the Math by booking coupons. The bhog is available till 8 pm. The evening arati is offered every day after 22 minutes of sunset.
