Jagannath Puri holds a certain importance because it is one of the four sacred pilgrimage places of Hindus. The temple was constructed in 11th century and serves as a starting point for the Rath Yatra held in July. The main temple in Puri is surrounded by about 30 temples and it is said that if you are going to visit each and every temple, then the purpose of your visit will be fulfilled. The main porch has the presiding deities in the sanctum sanctorum.

Along with Jagannatha, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are also worshipped here. These three, constitute the basic and fundamental Trinity and are considered to be the forms and manifestations of the omni-present, omni-scient and omni- potent supreme power. A replica of Jagannatha, Sridevi and Bhudevi are also installed in the sanctum sanctorum and worshipped. The temple complex is huge and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

  • Puri is well connected by rails and airways both. The nearest airport is Bhubaneshwar which is 53 km away. Regular flights are available from all major cities in India. Direct trains are operated from major cities like Kolkata, Delhi, and Mumbai.
  • The official timings of the temple are from 5:00 AM to 12 Midnight. Temple is closed in the afternoon between 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Visitor Information

  • Non-Hindus or Hindus but not Indians are not allowed inside the temple premises.
  • Footwear is not allowed inside the temple premises and you need to remove them before entering the gates.
  • Smoking and drinking are prohibited inside the temple complex.
  • Don’t wear too revealing clothes and wear a conservative form of dress in accordance with the local culture of the place.
  • Photography strictly prohibited so don’t take your cameras and mobile phones inside the Temple.

  • English and Hindi languages are well spoken and understood by locals.

Best Time to Visit

If you really want to enjoy your stay in Puri, then you must visit the place in the months of November to February. Puri faces huge crowed of tourists during the peak season, which can be avoided by visiting the place in the months of June and July.

Mangal Aarti


Mangal Aarti is performed in the morning. The clothes worn by the God are taken off along with the jewels to prepare them for their ritualistic bath. Surya Puja and Dwarapal Puja are performed at 8:00 AM. Gopala Ballava Pooja is performed in a brief manner with pancha upachar only

Ratha Yatra


Ratha Yatra, is commonly known as Gundicha Yatra. Gundicha was queen of Indradyumna. Ratha means Chariot, and the festival also known as chariot festival, where idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, the main deities of Sri Mandir, are taken to the Gundicha temple in bejeweled chariots and are brought back to the Temple in the same way.

Sakala Dhupa


Sakala Dhupa is performed in front of the three deities by three Pundits. Sandhya Dhupa Aarti is performed between 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Pahuda at 12 midnight when the deities are taken to Ratnasimhasana where they retire to bed.

Mahamaya Temple


Mahamaya Temple, is situated in Hirapur which is 15 km away from Bhubaneswar. Mahamaya Temple is also known as 64 Yogini temple, 64 Yoginis Temple is a tantric temple.
