Overview

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the biggest temples in India and is situated at Tamil Nadu. The temple has a square shape and has 12 massive gopurams. The temple is square shaped and a series of concentric streets with names from Tamil months surround the structure. The entire temple occupies around 45 acres, with each side having an entrance of its own. There are 4 four entrances in the temple and the main entrance is to the Meenakshi Amman shrine. The Temple attracts six thousand visitors a day and gets annual revenue of crores of Rupees.

The thousand pillared hall at the right of the temple’s entrance is an architectural & engineering marvel, built in 16th century. There is a huge idol of Lord Ganesha as you move from the kilikoontu mandapam to Lord Sundareswarar's sannadhi. Aaiyiram Kaal Mandapam, Ashtashakti Mandapam, Meenakshi Nayakan Mandapam, Killi Kootu Mandapam, is one of the many attractions of this temple.

General Information

  • Meenakshi Amman Temple is well connected by roads and airport. Madurai Airport is 12 kilometres from Madurai Junction and it offers flights to major cities in southern and western India. You will get lot of local taxis to roam around the town as well. Trains are the major mode of entry into the city. The railway station is centrally located and is well connected by trains to many parts of India like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi.
  • The official timings of the temple are from 5:00 AM - 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  • There are no entry fees at the temple.
  • The “Golden Lotus Tank “or “Pottramarai Kulam” is another fascinating sight of the complex. Also take a look at expansive “Parrot Cage” or “Kilikoondu Mandapam Corridor” around sanctum of Meenakshi where they are trained to call out the name “Meenakshi.”

Visitor Information

  • Before entering the temple, you must have to take bath
  • Dress code for men: No shorts, lunges, and caps are allowed, only full pants and shirt.
  • Dress code for women: No western outfits, if any sleeveless kurtis/ suit is worn, it must be covered with a shawl.
  • You cannot take your DSLR and point and shoot camera inside the temple premises. However, you can use the mobile phone camera for fees of 50 rupees.
  • For special Darshan and Museum visit, you have to buy tickets.
  • Objects like penknife, nail cutter, and inflammable objects like cigarettes, matchboxes are not allowed inside the temple.
  • Footwear is not allowed inside the temple premises and you need to remove them before entering the gates.
  • Throw your garbage at the bins as littering inside the premises is strictly prohibited.
  • Umbrella, Sticks, Materials made of animal skin should not be brought inside the temple.
  • There are variety of food options available and don’t forget to try the local delicacies like jigar thanda, veechu parotta, kothu parotta, idli, and paruthi paal.

Best Time to Visit

The climatic conditions of the place are typical to its location and it receives plenty of rainfall throughout the year. The best time to visit Madurai is from October to March as it’s neither too hot nor too cold.

Meenakshi Thirukalyanam

The most important festival is celebrated in the temple is the "Meenakshi Thirukalyanam" (the divine marriage of Meenakshi) that is held in April every year. People considered this time as auspicious.
